Heart attacks among young people are on the rise globally, and India is no exception. Factors such as sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, stress, smoking, and obesity contribute significantly to this alarming trend. The modern lifestyle, with its fast pace and high stress, has led to an increase in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) among the youth.
In India, hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major risk factor for CVDs. It is estimated that around 220 million people in India are living with hypertension, but only 12% have their blood pressure under control. This lack of control is due to low awareness, inadequate primary care, and poor follow-up.
Case Studies:
KK (Krishnakumar Kunnath) a celebrated Indian singer, passed away suddenly due to a heart attack on May 31, 2022, after a live performance in Kolkata. The autopsy revealed that KK had several blockages in his coronary arteries, leading to myocardial infarction (heart attack). Excessive excitement during his performance caused a stoppage of blood flow, resulting in cardiac arrest
Mohsin Khan, known for his role in the TV show “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai,” revealed that he suffered a mild heart attack in 2023 due to fatty liver disease. Mohsin was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which led to a heart attack. His hectic schedule and disrupted sleep patterns contributed to his condition3.
Consider the case of a 20-year-old Kashmiri girl who tragically suffered a heart attack while dancing. This incident highlights the vulnerability of even young individuals to serious heart conditions.
The prevalence of high blood pressure among young people in India is concerning, with 12% of young people aged 15 to 45 having high blood pressure and 33% being pre-hypertensive.
Awareness and Action:
Creating awareness about the importance of early screening and regular monitoring of blood pressure is crucial. The Government of India, in collaboration with various organizations, has launched initiatives like the India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) to address this issue. The IHCI aims to reduce the prevalence of hypertension by 25% by 2025 through improved access to treatment services and better management of hypertension.
